The
Teton Dam
The
date June 5th 1976 marked the end of an era. On this day the Teton
Dam located in Eastern
Idaho crumbled and flooded the valley below. The disaster brought attention
to the unchecked practice of dam building by the Bureau of Reclamation.
Over
a quarter
of a century later, the topic of the dam rarely becomes the center
of
conversation,
but off in the distance
lies a monument
to the disastrous day. A twenty mile stretch of a once pristine river canyon
lies in ruins, not
much different from how it was left more then twenty-five years earlier.
